Cairns, QLD
The wet and the range road are the real brief
Charter boats out of Trinity Inlet, cane along the Mulgrave, and blocks above the range are three different deliveries. The city is a narrow strip between the escarpment and the sea. Rain here is its own season. Unsealed tracks become a day-by-day call, and low ground stays soft for a long stretch.
Stock already in Cairns
Cairns is a partner depot, and a local order starts here. Seeing one means booking a time, and photos of that unit go out before it is loaded. A beach block with no side gate is a crane lift. A shorter box on a straight driveway can slide off a tilt-tray. Whether a long unit is even worth offering is decided on the range road, not in the suburb.
Range, reef and cane
Gordonvale is 4865, among the Mulgrave cane. Smithfield is 4878, toward the northern beaches. Mareeba is 4880, up on the Tablelands. Innisfail is 4860, south. Port Douglas is 4877. Babinda, Edmonton and Palm Cove turn up on the same map and are not given another code here.
Wet season and climbs
A cane headland, a Tablelands track or a bush drive cannot be locked in a fortnight out once the wet is running. Machans Beach holds water, and so do Holloways Beach and Aeroglen. Barron flats and the Mulgrave stay soft after the cloud has gone, which chooses the corner.
Northern beaches from Trinity Beach through Kewarra to Palm Cove are sandy, tight and often without a side path, so a lift over the fence is ordinary. Edmonton and Mount Peter are narrow estate streets and unsettled fill. The Gillies toward Atherton, and the climb to Kuranda, bring hairpins and length limits a long rigid may miss. A truck that cannot make the bend has to reverse. A twenty-foot is the usual size above the range. Two of them beat one forty-foot.
Charters and the Tablelands
Reef operators out of the inlet store gear between seasons. Cane through Gordonvale and Babinda keeps chemical and parts dry. Builds at Mount Peter need a site chest. Mareeba and Atherton take feed and machinery. People between houses use a lock-up while the next place is sorted.
Can a cane headland be booked a fortnight out in the wet?
Not honestly. Unsealed approaches are a day-by-day call once heavy rain is about. A Tablelands track is the same.
Why is a northern-beach block usually a lift?
Trinity Beach, Kewarra and Palm Cove are often sandy and without a side path. Clearing the fence is normal. The crane still needs firm setup ground.
Will a forty-foot make the Gillies?
Often it will not. The Gillies toward Atherton is steep and posted for length. A twenty-foot works. Two of them beat a forty that cannot turn.
Which flats stay soft after the cloud has gone?
Machans Beach and Holloways Beach hold water, and so do the Barron flats. That should decide the corner, not whether you buy.
