Toowoomba, QLD
Oakey can wait on rain while Rangeville cannot wait on pitch
The climb is the first fact, hundreds of metres between the yard and the street. A bypass took the old pinch out of the timetable and did not shorten the day. On top, black soil cracks hard in October and turns to grease in February. The box will sit for decades if that first day is planned.
Up the Warrego
Toowoomba orders go west on the Warrego and up over the range. Photos of the Toowoomba unit go out before the range run is booked. Each way takes a couple of hours, so the runs are grouped. Dry storage through a Downs winter means cargo-worthy or new. An as-is unit costs less and is not offered as watertight.
Toowoomba lengths and grades are listed before anyone books the range.
Bypass, then black soil
Heavy vehicles use the graded bypass rather than the old climb in traffic. Predictable, and not short. Glenvale and Harristown are wide, and so are Wilsonton, Westbrook and Kearneys Spring. Rangeville, Prince Henry Heights, Redwood and Mount Lofty fall off at the gutter, so a tilt bed fouls early and the block often drops toward the edge. Crane those.
East Toowoomba and Newtown carry camphor laurel, jacaranda and plane tree at truck height. Downs gates stay wide until the clay is wet, and then the truck waits. A shaded approach can hold frost into a winter morning. Firm ground lets a shorter length leave a tilt-tray. The long box, an escarpment pitch, or a fence all want a crane.
Grain, shows, frost
Cambooya, Westbrook, Pittsworth and Oakey want grain, seed and chemicals kept shut. Torrington, Charlton and Wellcamp hold machinery parts. Highfields and Kearneys Spring builds need a site store, and so does Glenvale. Renovations through East Toowoomba, Newtown and Rangeville want a lock-up. Show gear needs a place between events. Toward Crows Nest it is feed, tack and fencing.
Notes on the climb, frost and what black soil does when wet.
Does the bypass make a Toowoomba drop a quick trip?
Predictable, yes. Each way still takes a couple of hours, so range work is grouped. A fixed date needs an early call.
Black soil at Oakey after a storm. Drive in?
No. Dry, it carries a loaded truck. Wet, it carries nothing, and it will not announce which until the wheels are on it. Wait.
Rangeville drive falls away at the kerb. Crane?
Usually. A tilt bed fouls the gutter early, and the block often falls toward the escarpment. The long box is the same conversation.
Frost on a shaded drive in July. Does that matter?
Yes, up here. Ice can sit into the morning in a way it never does on the coast. A greasy shaded drive waits for the sun.
