The Hume is kind and the Murray is two sets of rules

Albury, NSW

The Hume is kind and the Murray is two sets of rules

The Hume runs straight past Albury, and the freight precinct north of town was built for heavy vehicles, so the road side of this job is comparatively kind. The Murray is the hard part. The state line travels with the river, and a Lavington yard and a Wodonga yard a short drive apart answer to different councils. Know which rule applies before the order, not after the box is down.

Same southern inland run

Border orders follow the inland route and share the southern run used for the Riverina. Photos of the Albury unit go out before the Hume run is booked. Say which side of the Murray the box will stand on.

Murray towns and codes

Albury is 2640. Lavington is 2641. Howlong is 2643. Holbrook is 2644. Corowa is 2646. Wodonga, across the river in Victoria, is 3690. Jindera, Thurgoona and Culcairn sit in the same border district. A Lavington factory yard and a Howlong river block should not be booked as if they were one address.

Gums, granite and frost

Most town, estate and industrial drops take a tilt-tray. A crane covers tight yards, over-fence lifts, and awkward river blocks. Toward the Murray, including the side channels at Thurgoona and Table Top and the Howlong approaches, the ground is sandy loam among river red gums. It looks firm, then gives under an axle, and the limbs hang low enough to catch a raised bed. Nail Can Hill and the West Albury ridges are granite: short, steep, ledged, firm and rarely level. From May through August frost lifts a surface overnight and river fog can delay a start, so rural winter slots sit later. East Albury and North Albury have short drives and narrow gates. Thurgoona and Springdale Heights add tight carriageways, kerb pits and thin turf on unsettled fill.

Freight, farms and boats

Plant on rail land north of town and toward Ettamogah. Materials at Thurgoona and Springdale Heights. Feed through Jindera, Walla Walla, Howlong and Culcairn. Factory gear on both banks. Boats near Lake Hume. Belongings during work on an East Albury place.

Reading on the state line, river gums and winter frost.

Do Lavington and Wodonga follow one council's rules?

They do not. The Murray carries the state line. Sort the rule for the block you have before ordering, not after the box is down.

Will river red gums catch a raised tilt bed?

They can. Tracks at Thurgoona, Table Top and Howlong run under limbs that hang low. The sandy loam looks firm, then gives.

What does granite change on the Nail Can ridges?

Footing is excellent and level ground is scarce. Short drives pitch at the kerb over rock. West Albury is the same. Say so before the tray leaves.

Why shift rural winter arrivals later in the morning?

From May into August frost lifts gravel overnight and river fog can hold a start. Yesterday's firm track can be slick early. Those months usually mean a mid-morning arrival.
