Lismore, NSW

Basin silt and the Goonellabah hill unload differently

The run comes north on the Pacific Highway and turns west on the Bruxner. That is how a Lismore order travels. People here already know what the river does. The useful talk is where the box sits, how high it sits, and what the streets do between the flats and the ridge.

North, then the Bruxner

Photos of the Lismore unit go out before the Bruxner run is booked, and delivery is quoted to the address. The truck takes the highway north and the Bruxner across. Say whether the box is for the flats or the Goonellabah hill.

Basin towns and ridges

Lismore, Goonellabah, Clunes and Nimbin share 2480. Casino is 2470. Alstonville is 2477, over on the plateau, and it has its own page. Dunoon and Modanville sit in the farm country without a code on this list. Say which of those you mean. A Goonellabah driveway and a Nimbin spur are not the same booking.

Flats versus the hill

Room beside the house lets a tilt-tray take a ten-foot or twenty-foot. A crane takes the forty-foot, the older narrow streets, and anything over a fence. South Lismore, North Lismore and behind Union Street the houses are timber on stumps, drives pitch at the kerb, and camphor laurels sit where a raised bed needs air. Flats silt dries hard, then sinks after a wet week, so pads matter. Goonellabah, East Lismore and Girards Hill are red basalt, steep at the kerb and slick once rain starts. Dunoon, Clunes, Modanville and Nimbin add crowned gravel, causeways that rise after rain higher up, and gates tighter than they look.

Rebuilds and farm gear

Site stores for trades still on basin repairs. Tools for owner-builders. Contents kept safe while a place is stripped. Macadamia gear through Dunoon, Clunes and Modanville. Beef and fencing toward Casino. Club kit after the sheds went.

Reading on height, silt and narrow basin streets.

How high should the box sit on the South Lismore flats?

High enough that a wet week does not swallow a corner. The silt dries like hardstand, then gives. Pads spread the load. Use what locals already know about levels.

Will camphor laurels stop a tilt bed in the older streets?

Yes, if limbs sit where the bed must rise. Behind Union Street a truck can pass underneath and still be unable to unload. A crane from the carriageway is often cleaner.

What changes once the address is up on Goonellabah?

Red basalt, a crest at the kerb, and a drive that slicks within minutes of rain. Girards Hill and East Lismore do the same. Morning firmness is not an afternoon promise.

What should a Nimbin or Clunes track photo include?

The gate at its tightest, any causeway, and the turn at the end. Rain higher up can lift a crossing while the spur looks dry.
