Townsville, QLD
A garrison port that takes its rain in a rush
Families land on posting and leave again, the port keeps moving, and most of the year's rain arrives in a short burst. Gear for the corridor west along the Flinders is staged between jobs. The 2019 sheets of water, crossing yards rather than simply filling a river, still matter when you pick a corner.
Depot in the city
Townsville is a partner depot, and a local order starts here. A look at the unit is a booked time, and photos go out before loading. Castle Hill drives are where a tilt-tray gives up. Port and base jobs that must land on a marked square go on the crane. A short box on level suburban ground can still come off a tray.
Burdekin and the island
Thuringowa is 4817, on the growing side of the city. Ayr is 4807 and Ingham is 4850, cane country north and south. Charters Towers is 4820, inland. Magnetic Island is 4819, and an island address has to be described on its own rather than booked as a mainland street.
Clay, rock, the base
Large suburban areas sit on reactive clay. Through Kirwan, Condon and Deeragun that movement racks a box if the corners have nothing under them. Near the water, the Strand, Pallarenda and North Ward go sandier, with salt and a shallow water table in places.
Streets wrapped around Castle Hill are short, steep and often turn as they climb. A tilt bed grounds. The crane is usually quicker. Base and port gates want identification, an escort and a window, arranged ahead. Stuart and Bohle are otherwise hardstand. In 2019 water moved across the ground through Idalia, Rosslea and Oonoonba. That belongs in the choice of corner.
Postings and the port
Defence households between quarters need a whole house held securely. Bohle and Stuart trades keep tools. The Flinders corridor stages gear before it goes west. Boats overflow garages. Grazing toward Woodstock takes feed. Builds at Deeragun and Idalia need a site store.
Notes on reactive clay, base gates and where water crossed.
Can reactive clay at Kirwan rack a box?
Yes, over a couple of seasons, if the corners sit on the clay. Condon and Deeragun move the same way. Pads under the castings keep the doors shutting.
Why do Castle Hill drives defeat a tilt-tray?
They are short, steep and often turn as they rise, so the bed grounds. A crane from the street is the usual fix if the setup is firm.
What does a base or port gate need beforehand?
Identification, any escort and the window. Easy a few days out, impossible at the boom. Stuart hardstand is a simpler booking than a base.
Where did the 2019 water actually cross?
Across the ground through Idalia, Hermit Park, Rosslea and Oonoonba. Blocks with a quiet history still learned otherwise. Pick the corner with that in mind.
