Crush, shutdown and wet leave few quiet weeks
A grower locking chemical before the crush, a yard at Paget staging spares for Moranbah, and a boat owner at Blacks Beach can all call the same morning. Tramways lace the Pioneer Valley. The beaches are sand. What they share is the calendar: crush, basin shutdowns and a wet that does not do light rain.
Held here first
Local orders are released from the Mackay yard at The Leap. Inspection is by a booked time, and photos of the unit go out before it is loaded for a Mackay address. Cane headlands are the crane jobs. A short box with a straight, firm approach can come off a tilt-tray. Photograph the headland, not the highway.
Tramways and the wet
Private cane crossings through Marian, Mirani and Walkerston are not always level with the road. A proud crossing with a short approach hangs a long truck. Headlands suit a tractor, not a rigid. During the crush those tracks are busy. Flats hold water, and a Monday track can be finished by Thursday.
Paget is the straightforward end: hardstand, wide entries, often a forklift already there, plus yard windows. Bucasia, Eimeo and Blacks Beach are sand with salt in the air. West Mackay brings figs and short drives. Rural View and Ooralea add narrow estate roads, kerb pits and fill that has not settled.
Crush and shutdowns
Farms through the valley lock chemical, fertiliser and irrigation fittings where the shed already overflows. Mining-service yards stage consumables for Dysart and the basin. Paget holds tools and plant. Northern beaches take boat and camping gear that beat the garage. Estates at Ooralea and Beaconsfield need site stores. Marine and engineering trades near the harbour want a secure bay of their own.
Notes on tramways, the wet and beach sand.
Will a cane crossing stop a long truck?
It will if the rails sit proud and the approach is short. Say so, including whether the crush has that line in use.
Are Pioneer Valley headlands wide enough?
They are built for a tractor. A rigid needs a real turn, or the crane places from firmer ground. Describe the headland, not just the farm.
What does a wet week do to a farm track?
Alluvial ground holds water, and a few wet days can match a dry year's fall. A Monday track is not a promise by Thursday.
Why is Blacks Beach a different setup from Paget?
Paget is hardstand. Blacks Beach and Bucasia are sand that carries a car and not always a loaded rear axle. Salt is the long-term extra.
