Blackbutt is the first problem, the red slope the second

Kingaroy, QLD

Blackbutt is the first problem, the red slope the second

Kingaroy starts on the D'Aguilar at Blackbutt, and a 40ft is a different truck there from a 20ft. Over the range, red soil and fall take over. Drives cross the slope. Corners that do not share a height show up in the doors. The unit is confirmed before the climb is booked, and photos go out before it is loaded.

Over Blackbutt

The booking runs north-west by Caboolture and crosses the Blackbutt Range along the D'Aguilar. Photos of the Kingaroy unit go out before that climb is booked. If the length you want is already confirmed, it goes on the next truck that can take the range.

Burnett towns, their codes

Nanango is 4615, over the next ridge. Wondai is 4606 and Murgon is 4605, north of town. Blackbutt is 4306, on the climb itself. Yarraman is 4614. Kingaroy's own code is 4610. A small block at Nanango and a vineyard road are not one approach, so name the locality.

Slope, camber and frost

Two things decide the day: the road in, and the fall on the block. Blackbutt's stretch of the D'Aguilar is graded, tight in places, with mature timber near the bitumen. A 20ft on a tilt-tray is an ordinary climb. A 40ft on a longer truck is slower, and some drives past the range should not see it. Where you need the floor and the approach is awkward, two twenties in a line often beat one forty.

Red soil is deep and the blocks roll. Drives run long and unsealed across the slope, drain on the high side, so the truck rides a camber. After rain the top slicks on a firm base and the truck slips to the low side. Shade can stay greasy at mid-morning in winter. Steep or terraced ground wants a crane. A straight firm run takes a tilt-tray for a 10ft or 20ft.

Seed, hay and vines

Kumbia, Taabinga and Memerambi keep peanuts, grain and seed in the box. Hay stays clear of vermin in a wet summer. Wooroolin and Wondai hold machinery parts. Moffatdale and Ficks Crossing want a lock for the cellar-door stores. Piggeries site the box outside the shed area. Nanango blocks use it where the shed is not built yet.

A few notes on length, slope, and stores off the red soil.

Is a 40ft sensible once it has to climb Blackbutt?

Sometimes. The climb is slower, and some drives past the range will not take the length. Two 20ft units in a line are often easier on the day.

The drive crosses a slope. Will the truck hold the crown?

In the dry, usually. After rain the red surface goes slick on a firm base and the truck moves to the low side. Say when it last rained.

Do winter mornings change the time you can arrive?

They can. Frost leaves a shaded stretch greasy after the open road has dried. Ten in the morning can still be early for that section.

The pad falls away. Does that matter on red soil?

Yes. Corners at different heights rack the frame. Sleepers brought to one plane, doors facing uphill, are the usual fix.
