Cedar Grove acreage still fails at an unrated grid
Nobody out here is short of room, which is why the job looks easy and sometimes is not. No body corporate, no parked car in the only working spot. What there is instead is a private grid, a long gravel approach, and a gate that measures tighter than it looked from the ute.
Down the Lindesay
Jimboomba orders run out through Logan and down the Mount Lindesay highway. Photos of the Jimboomba unit go out before dispatch. The unit is confirmed first, then the grid and the gravel decide how far the truck comes in.
Acreage postcodes
Flagstone and North Maclean share 4280 with Jimboomba, one a growing estate edge and one the river-flat side. Cedar Grove is 4285. Munruben is 4125, and Greenbank is 4124, both back toward the suburban fringe and still full of the same private approaches.
Grids and gravel
Grids first, around Cedar Grove and Woodhill especially. Many were welded for a ute, no plate, nobody left who remembers. If it cannot be vouched for, use another gate, land on solid ground by the bitumen, or stand a crane outside and reach past.
Crowned gravel with drains both sides is fine in spring and greasy after a wet week. A wheel off the crown stops in the drain. The tray has to sit square, so the far end needs a real turn. Posts make gateways tighter than they look. A pump-shed wire and ironbark around four metres sit in the path of a raised bed. Horses hate steel sliding on steel, so clear the laneway. Most acreage is a tilt-tray. The crane comes when the gate, the grid or the turn says the tray cannot sit square.
Hay, tack, wire
Hay, chaff and pellets stay dry and away from vermin. Tack, rugs and float gear come out of the shed with the hole in the roof. Side-by-sides, slashers and ride-ons get a lock. Fencing wire, posts and strainers live in one place. North Maclean and Stockleigh irrigation and pump fittings stay together. Owner-builders parking tools on a block where the house is still two years off use the same box.
A note on grids, wet gravel and horses near the unload.
Our grid has no plate. Will the truck cross it?
Not on a guess. Another gate, a landing near the bitumen, or a crane standing outside the grid. Those three work. Testing it does not.
Six hundred metres of gravel after rain. Come anyway?
Only if the crown still holds and there is a turn at the house. Otherwise wait, or stop the box on firm ground short of the greasy section.
Horses are in the paddock beside the unload. A problem?
The noise of steel on a tilt bed spooks a lot of them. Have the laneway clear. Tell us if they will be close.
The gate looks wide from the ute. Measure it?
Yes, at the narrowest point, posts included. Acreage openings shrink once you are standing in them with a rigid behind you.
