Either direction is a multi-day haul before anyone talks about a crane
There is no short road in. About fifteen hundred kilometres of Stuart Highway separate town from the Darwin partner depot, and the southern path is a similar haul. A unit makes sense on a truck already making the trip, which is mostly notice. Summer heat, and the gap when the river runs, are the local halves of that plan.
Stuart from either end
Photos of the unit go out before it is dispatched down or up the Stuart. Usual release is the Darwin partner depot, then south on the Stuart Highway. The other path is an eastern-states unit carted through Adelaide and up the Stuart. Darwin stock is seen by arrangement. Photos are how you choose. Delivery is quoted to the Alice address once the approach is known.
Communities and the gap
Yulara, Hermannsburg, Ti Tree and Kings Canyon share 0872 and are not one run: resort, western community, highway stop and canyon are different days. Tennant Creek 0860 is well north, a town in its own right on the Darwin side. A Ciccone workshop and a Yulara store are not interchangeable.
Gap, gibber and heat
Heavitree Gap is the southern way in. A Todd in flood can shut it and hold a truck south of the range until the water drops. Past that pinch, Braitling, Larapinta, Gillen and newer Sadadeen are wide enough to square a rigid. Ciccone, Arunga Park and Brewer Estate are flat and used to trucks. A tilt-tray places a 10ft or 20ft there. A 40ft, or a lift over a fence, is a side loader or a crane. Old Eastside river gums and services on the frontage often make the crane the calmer choice. Gibber and compacted red gravel carry a box. Sandy bends of the Todd do not, and a freshly graded pad needs timber under the corners. Summer lifts belong in the morning.
Tours, art and cribs
Tour operators between seasons keep swags and trailers in one lock-up. Community stores and contractors stage resupply in town. Art centres keep materials secure. Ciccone, Arunga Park and Brewer Estate take workshop parts. Country along the Plenty, the Tanami and the Larapinta wants fodder and fencing stored closer than the next shed. A posting that arrives before a house does is the household version.
Notes on the gap, the heat, and ground along the river.
What does a running Todd do to a south-side delivery?
Heavitree Gap can close and leave the truck on the wrong side. It is rarely long. It is enough to move a crane booking by a day.
Is creek sand along the Todd a fair pad?
No. It is loose and deep. Gibber and compacted red gravel are the surfaces that carry weight. Say if the pin is on river sand.
Why are summer lifts kept to the morning?
Steel in the sun since early is too hot to handle by lunch. Winter reverses it: frost at dawn, and a cold start on the truck.
Can Old Eastside gums force a crane?
Often. River gums, a narrow verge and services on the frontage leave no honest tilt-tray path. Book the lift from photos.
