Newcastle, NSW
The Hunter knows boxes and still loses the last hundred metres
Down the Pacific Highway, Newcastle is a long southbound haul into a city that already lives beside steel and coal. The harbour shifts boxes constantly. Mayfield and Kooragang were laid out for heavy plant. The surprise is still the last stretch: terrace streets surveyed for a cart, dune sand at Stockton, and western blocks over old workings.
South on the Pacific
Hunter orders travel south on the Pacific Highway once the size and grade are confirmed. Photos of that unit go out before the truck is booked. Terrace streets, Stockton sand and the western blocks over old workings still decide the truck.
Hunter towns on schedule
Newcastle is 2300. Maitland is 2320. Cessnock is 2325. Singleton is 2330. Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens are on this run without a single code worth printing here. Paterson, Dungog and the vines at Pokolbin sit further out. An industrial hardstand and a Cooks Hill lane are both Hunter work, and they are not booked the same way.
Terraces, sand, workings
Mayfield, Kooragang, Steel River, Cardiff, Beresfield and Thornton were built for articulated trucks, and those jobs are a phone call. Cooks Hill, Carrington, Islington, Wickham and Hamilton are terraces and rear lanes a tilt-tray will not thread, so a crane lifts from the street. Ten-foot and twenty-foot tilt only where a real side opening exists. Stockton, Fern Bay and the run toward Anna Bay are dune sand that looks sealed and will not carry an axle off the pavement. Hexham, Tarro, Raymond Terrace and the Maitland flats set hard in a dry spell and grease after rain. Parts of Lake Macquarie, Wallsend and West Wallsend sit over old coal workings: mention known movement so the weight lands on the stable part of the block.
Lanes, vines, hardstand
Lock-ups behind Cooks Hill, Islington and Carrington terraces. Plant at Mayfield, Cardiff and Thornton. Site stores through Adamstown and Merewether. Marine kit at Stockton. Feed through Paterson, Dungog and the Williams valley. Vine gear at Pokolbin, Lovedale and Rothbury.
Notes on terraces, dune sand and old coal workings.
Can a Cooks Hill terrace take a tilt-tray down the side?
Usually not. Carrington, Islington and Hamilton match it: a ute lane, a narrow yard, cars both sides. The crane stands in the street. A real side opening is the tilt case.
What happens if the truck leaves the seal at Stockton?
Fern Bay and the Anna Bay strip are the same dune sand. It looks paved. An axle off the seal finds otherwise at once. Stay on made pavement.
Should known mine movement be mentioned before placement?
Yes. Parts of Lake Macquarie, Wallsend and West Wallsend sit over old workings. That rarely stops the truck. It should move where the weight goes.
Are Mayfield and Kooragang the straightforward Hunter jobs?
They are, with Steel River, Beresfield and Thornton. Hardstand built for articulated trucks. Inner terraces and the coastal sand are the other conversation.
