Coffs Harbour, NSW
The range meets the sea and the driveway shows it
Coming south on the Pacific Highway, Coffs Harbour is a short coastal haul. Nowhere else on this coast does the range fall so hard toward the surf. Flat land is a strip. Leave it and you are on a slope, which is why bananas sit on grades a tractor resents. Plenty of drives pitch off the kerb. The rest are sand behind a beach.
A short highway south
A Coffs order is a short run south on the Pacific Highway. Photos of the unit go out before that truck is booked. Hillside kerbs and beach sand are named with the length, because they pick the truck.
Beaches and the range
Coffs Harbour is 2450. Sawtell is 2452. Bellingen is 2454. Urunga is 2455. Woolgoolga is 2456. Nambucca Heads is 2448. Emerald Beach, Sapphire and Moonee sit on the same coastal sand. The Waterfall Way toward Dorrigo is a different climb again. Name the beach or the range when you ask.
Kerb breaks and sand
A clear side puts a ten-foot or twenty-foot on a tilt-tray. Crane work covers a forty-foot, a steep hillside, or a lift over a fence. Off the flat, at Korora, Diggers Beach, Boambee East, upper Toormina and above the Jetty, drives fall at the kerb and often break grade at the boundary. That break stops a tilt bed, and a car will not always show it. Sawtell, Sapphire, Emerald Beach and Moonee are beach sand with the water table high, so thin turf holds neither axle nor corner. Plantation slopes inland turn slick under netting soon after rain. Bypass works have shifted traffic, so the arrival is a window. Sandy Beach and Bonville add narrow streets, kerb pits and covenants. West via the Waterfall Way, the climb to Bellingen and Dorrigo picks the length.
Fruit, harbour, bypass
Netting and bins on blueberry and banana blocks from Boambee through Corindi and Woolgoolga. Harbour nets and outboards. Beach kit at Sawtell and Sapphire. Builder stores on the hill estates and the bypass. Timber toward Bellingen and Dorrigo.
Notes on kerb pitch, beach sand and the bypass window.
What grounds a tilt bed on the Coffs hillsides?
A break of grade at the boundary, easy to miss from a car. Korora, Diggers Beach and the hill above the Jetty do it. Hairpins with no room at the top become crane jobs.
Why quote a delivery window instead of a single clock time?
Bypass works have moved traffic and closed approaches. A span is honest. One exact minute is not.
Will the sand at Sawtell hold a loaded truck?
Sapphire, Emerald Beach and Moonee are the same. Beach sand with a high water table drains and carries almost nothing. Keep the truck on pavement built for weight.
Does the Waterfall Way limit how long a box can be?
Toward Bellingen and Dorrigo the climb is steep, tight and low in the canopy. The road picks the size. Up there, twenty-foot is the usual answer.
