Getting a truck in
Town and cape are two different delivery landscapes. Busselton itself is flat, with generous streets and older lots in West Busselton, Broadwater and Abbey that usually have space down one side. The newer estates at Vasse, Yalyalup and Provence are laid out for cars and trailers and are generally easy for a tilt-tray. The cape is harder. Around Dunsborough, Eagle Bay and Yallingup, many lots are steep, rocky and heavily treed with peppermint, marri and banksia, and the roads are narrow with little shoulder. Driveways can drop sharply off the road or bend between granite boulders, and a container that can be placed on a flat site in town may need a crane on the cape. Caves Road is the main artery south and it is busy. During school holidays, around Christmas and at Easter it fills with caravans, cyclists and visitors looking at the view instead of the road, so deliveries are best booked outside the peak. Wineries and farms have their own rhythm: gravel tracks, vineyard rows, fruit bins stacked in the yard, and gates that need to be left as found. Around Margaret River the forest closes in, especially through the tall karri stands to the south, and overhanging branches decide how high a load can travel. Low ground between the bay and the Vasse
Much of Busselton sits only a few metres above sea level, with the Vasse River, the Lower Vasse and the Vasse-Wonnerup wetlands at its back and the bay at its front. In summer that makes very little difference. Through a wet winter the water table comes up under the sandy ground, low corners of lots stay wet for weeks, and the lawn that looked firm in February will not take a loaded truck in August. If your block is near the wetlands or in one of the lower streets, tell us where the water sits after rain, because that is where the truck should not go and where the container should not be placed.
The setup that suits this ground is pads or sleepers under each corner, levelled against one another and set on the firmest part of the lot, with the floor kept clear of the sand so it can dry out. On the lowest land it is worth thinking about storms as well. When a winter front pushes water into the bay on a big tide, the lowest parts of town can see water where it is not usually found. A container keeps rain off from above but it does nothing to keep rising water out. Seawater pushed up through the town will find its way around door gaskets, and a light, empty unit can be floated clear of where you left it. Put it on the high side of the block and keep anything that matters up off the floor.
Inland, the beef and dairy country toward Carbunup, Metricup and Jindong tells the same story on a larger scale. Paddocks that carry a truck easily through summer turn heavy and wet after the winter rains, and gateways churned by stock and tractors are the softest ground on the farm. Farm drops are best planned for when the ground is dry, or onto a gravel pad near the sheds where a loader can move the container later. Tell us the width of the gateway at its narrowest point, whether there is a grid or culvert on the way in, and where a loaded truck can turn around.

Wineries and vineyards through Wilyabrup, Yallingup and Margaret River use containers for barrels, dry goods, packaging, irrigation parts, tractors and spare equipment. The one thing to plan around is vintage, which usually runs late summer into autumn. For those weeks every road into a vineyard is full of harvesters, bin trailers and trucks carrying fruit, and nobody has spare time to meet a container delivery. Get it in before vintage starts, or after the last fruit is in, and make sure the drop point will not be in the way of the fruit coming in.
Temperature is the other issue for anyone storing wine or anything temperature sensitive. A standard steel container in full sun gets hot inside on a summer afternoon, and it swings more than a well-insulated building would. That is fine for tanks, hoses, tools and packaging. It is not fine for bottled stock or barrels holding wine. For those, ask about an insulated or refrigerated unit, or at least site the container in shade with good ventilation. We need a contact who can answer on the day, the gate code or key arrangement, a note on whether any dogs are on the property, and a photo of the exact spot with something in the picture that marks the corner. If a property manager looks after the house, put us in touch with them. If a neighbour will be there, that works too.

Not in a standard one left in the sun. A plain steel container heats up quickly on a summer afternoon and cools overnight, and that swing is hard on bottled wine and barrels. Can a container go on a steep block at Eagle Bay or Yallingup?
Often, yes, but it usually needs a crane truck rather than a tilt-tray. Cape blocks tend to fall away from the road with granite, peppermints and banksia in the way, and a tilt-tray needs a straight, firm run to the spot. A crane truck can reach over from the road if there is clear air above the lot. Send photos of the road, the drive and the spot, and mention any overhead power so we can tell you what will work.
