Whyalla, SA

The streets are easy, and the salt air is not

Whyalla orders leave Adelaide port terminals and run north. Orders leave Adelaide port terminals and run north on the Augusta Highway. You choose from photographs. Streets are wide and calcrete carries a truck. Salt off Spencer Gulf is what the steel has to live with, so the grade matters.

North from Adelaide terminals

Adelaide port terminals are the release. Photos of the Whyalla unit go out before it leaves the terminal. Wide streets let a shorter unit come off a tilt-tray. Inside a fenced yard, or for a long unit, send a crane. An operating site needs its induction, permit and contact arranged before the truck leaves. A vehicle waiting on a gate is a lost day.

Upper gulf localities

Port Augusta is 5701, at the head of the gulf, and has its own page. Back down the coast, Port Pirie is 5540. Cowell is 5602, across on Eyre Peninsula. Iron Knob is 5601, inland at the iron. Kimba is 5641, further west on the grain country. Point Lowly and the Middleback Ranges are named when the container is going there.

Wide streets, fenced sites

Corners are generous, and calcrete carries a truck, so a tilt-tray finishes most house jobs. An operating site is different: induction, a named contact and a permit come before dispatch. Summer middays are harsh, so morning is usual. Rare rain turns gypsum crust to slop. Past the seal, pit tracks can close, and the run follows the road rather than the calendar.

Steel, boats and stations

Contractors at the steelworks and the Middleback Ranges need tools under lock. Point Lowly and False Bay want a dry store for dive and boat gear. Stations inland want feed and pump parts. A cargo-worthy unit, or a new one, is checked against wind and rain. An as-is unit is cheaper and carries no such promise.

Notes on coastal air, grades and deliveries inside a working plant.

Does salt air change which grade makes sense?

It changes how hard the coating must work. Ask for a grade checked against wind and rain if the contents must stay dry. The cheaper grade makes no such promise.

Can a delivery enter a fenced operating site?

Only after the site arranges an induction, a permit and someone to meet the truck. That is done before the truck leaves Adelaide.

Is the middle of a summer day a sound hour?

It is a poor one. From late spring an early start is kinder to anyone handling doors. The quote will usually suggest morning.

What if rain arrives on the morning?

Expect a move if the address is on gypsum crust. Dry, it resembles pavement. Wet, it will not hold a wheel. Unsealed tracks past town can also shut.

Room for more.Less mucking around.
