Tamworth, NSW

Black soil on the Peel decides the day, not the highway

The New England Highway takes Tamworth stock over the ranges and onto a scheduled inland run. Nothing sits waiting in town. About half the drops land on a place with horses. The rest are town blocks and the sheds at Taminda. Black soil links them: superb country for growing, and a poor surface for a loaded truck once rain has hit.

Ranges onto New England

Peel orders are carted inland over the ranges and join the New England on a schedule rather than a truck kept locally. Photos of the Tamworth unit go out before that run is booked. Black soil and the grid belong in the first note.

Peel and plains towns

Tamworth is 2340. Werris Creek is 2341. Quirindi is 2343. Manilla is 2346. Gunnedah is 2380. Armidale, higher on the range, is 2350. Kootingal, Nemingha and Nundle sit on the same inland run. A Taminda yard and a Manilla grid are different endings to that schedule.

Black soil and grids

Most town and property drops suit a tilt-tray. A crane comes when a gate, a yard or powerlines make a tilt unsafe. Ask what the drive is made of and when it last rained. Dry black soil sets and cracks. Soon after decent rain it is grease a loaded rigid will not climb or steer. There is no middle, so a wet week waits. Red basalt at Moore Creek and toward Nundle is only a little kinder. Many private grids were welded for a ute, with no load plate. If the figure is unknown the truck stays near the seal, uses another gate, or the box is lifted. Line the tilt bed up straight at the far end, and move horses out of the lane first. The unload is loud, and there may be nowhere to turn.

Horses, hay, Taminda

Hay and hard feed off the vermin. Tack and float gear. Drenches out of the heat. Wire and posts. Trade storage at Taminda and Westdale. Materials at Calala, Hillvue and Moore Creek. Parts through Manilla, Kootingal and the Liverpool Plains.

Notes on black soil, unrated grids and horses in the lane.

How can anyone tell if black soil will carry the truck?

Not from the house. Dry, it sets and cracks. After rain it will not steer a loaded rigid. Say when it last rained. A wet week moves the booking.

What if the cattle grid has never been rated?

Say so. Many were built for a ute and carry no plate. The truck stays this side, another gate is used, or the box is lifted.

Why clear the horses before the truck is committed?

Hydraulics, chains and steel on steel. Once the combination is in the lane it may not turn. Shift stock before it arrives.

Do yard powerlines rule a tilt-tray out?

They can. A raised bed needs air, and a line to a shed often sits in the way. That is a crane job, same as a yard the tray cannot enter.

Room for more.Less mucking around.
