Shipping containers Dalby

Black soil decides more about a Dalby delivery than the container ever will. Vertosol opens into cracks in October that will swallow a fence dropper, and it carries almost anything you drive across it. Put fifty millimetres of rain through it and the top of it turns to a grease that packs solid into a tyre tread and stops it doing its job. A paddock track that carried a truck at nine can be a bad idea by two in the afternoon. We plan Dalby runs around that rather than pretending it does not happen.

What sets the timing
Black soil after rain matters here as much as what is standing at Cornubia — the date is confirmed when you place the order
Likely truck
Tilt-tray for 10ft and 20ft on a firm approach; crane truck for 40ft and for anything going in behind a shed or over a fence

Buying or hiring a container in Dalby

What you can buy or hire here
10ft, 20ft and 40ft — general purpose, high cube, side opening, refrigerated and dangerous goods — in new single-trip, cargo-worthy used or as-is, to buy or to hire. Delivered to Dalby and the district around it.
How you get a delivered price
Send the form below or ring 1300 467 776. The container and the cartage to your address come back as one figure from a person — nothing on this page calculates it.
What we need from you
The delivery suburb or postcode, what is going in it, roughly when, and ideally three photos of the entry. That is enough for us to rule out the wrong configuration before we quote.
What changes availability and delivery
Which yard is holding the size and grade you want, the truck your site can take — the site and the carrier decide that, not the container — and what is already travelling that way. Timing on this page is indicative; the actual date comes with the quote.

Cornubia is the only yard you can walk into — ring first. Everywhere else, ask for photographs of the actual unit before delivery, or inspection by arrangement at a partner depot.

Grade moves the price more than size does, and it is what decides whether a unit is sold watertight — the full rundown is on the grades page.

Local jobs, by what goes inside

Around Dalby we deliver containers for chemical, spray and drum storage on the grain and cotton country out through Cecil Plains, Jimbour and Macalister, tool and spare parts lock-ups at the feedlots north and west of town, laydown and consumables storage for gas field service crews working around Kogan, Kupunn and Condamine, a shed in a box on rural blocks where the machinery shed filled up a decade ago, site storage for builders working the residential streets in Dalby and Jandowae, and seed, fertiliser and fencing gear kept off the ground and out of the weather.

Reading the site for delivery

Dalby town is one of the easier deliveries on the Downs. The streets are wide, the layout is a grid with room for a rigid truck to stand and set up, and most blocks have a gate a bed can actually get through. What changes the job is which side of the front gate you are on and what the sky has been doing. The country around town is cracking black clay. In a dry spring it opens up and carries anything. After a decent fall, the top hundred and fifty millimetres turns to grease, packs into a tread and stops it gripping, and a track that carried a header last week will not carry a loaded rigid truck today. It does not have to be raining when we arrive. It only has to have rained since. Beyond the wet, it is the ordinary Western Downs details we ask about. Farm entrances built for a header and a chaser bin are usually generous, but plenty of them have an irrigation channel, a headland drain or a run of siphon pipe alongside. The gilgai country north toward Jimbour and Macalister gives you ground that looks dead flat from the ute and is nothing of the sort at a two hundred millimetre scale, which matters a great deal when four corner castings have to finish at the same height. Powerlines to a pump shed or a house sit at exactly the height a lifted tilt bed wants to be. And through harvest and picking there is module and B-double traffic using the same roads and laneways you are, so a delivery window that suits you has to suit the farm as well. Tell us the approach, the ground and the time of year at the enquiry and we will bring the truck that suits it.

Dalby

The hour that turns a good track into a bad one

Anyone who has farmed Western Downs black soil knows the change is not gradual. The ground goes from firm to unusable in about the time it takes a storm cell to cross the paddock, and it stays that way for days after the sun comes back out, because the clay holds water rather than shedding it. That is why we ask about your approach before we commit a truck to a date, and why a Dalby booking through summer carries a bit of built-in slack. A loaded rigid truck bogged four hundred metres from the road is not a small inconvenience. It is a tractor, a chain, a chewed-up track and a wasted day for both of us, and none of it needed to happen.

The practical answer is usually simple. If the paddock or the laneway is doubtful, the container goes down on the firmest ground a truck can reach, which is often the gravel apron near the road or beside the shed, and you shift it into position with a tractor and chains when the ground comes good. That is a normal way to do it out here and there is no shame in it. The other option is to move the date. We would rather ring you two days out and say the run is going Thursday instead of Tuesday than turn up and make your problem worse. If there is a spot on the place that stays hard no matter what the season is doing, tell us about it when you book, because that is usually where the truck should be aiming.

On the ground

Feedlots, gas crews and farm storage

Out here a container earns its keep. The feedlots north and west of town use them for parts, veterinary supplies, mill spares and anything that needs to be locked and dry within reach of the operation rather than back in town. The gas field service contractors working through Kogan, Condamine and out toward Wandoan use them as relocatable laydown, because a container can be craned onto a truck and moved to the next job in a way a shed cannot. Farms use them for chemical drums, spare parts, seed and fencing gear, generally because the machinery shed lost its spare floor space some years ago and nobody wants to be the one who leaves the drums under a tarp again. There is a steady trade too in containers going onto blocks around Bell and Jandowae as a first building, holding the tools and the materials while a shed or a house is still a set of plans.

The two questions worth settling at the quote are size and ventilation. A 20ft is the workhorse and it fits down a farm laneway and through a stock gate more comfortably than a 40ft does. A 40ft gives you a machinery-length store and suits a yard with a straight approach off a formed road. On ventilation, black soil country swings hard between a cold night and a hot day, and a sealed steel box with warm air in it will sweat on the underside of the roof and drip on whatever is below. Vents fitted before delivery cost very little and save an argument later. Say what is going inside and we will tell you what it needs. It is a two minute conversation at the quote and it decides how well the thing works for the next twenty years.

Worth knowing

How a Dalby load is actually scheduled

The container is loaded at our Cornubia yard, runs out through Ipswich and Toowoomba, down the range and out along the Warrego. That is a solid half day of driving before anything is unloaded, which is why Dalby is a scheduled run with the date confirmed at the order. In practice we build the Downs runs around the loads already booked, so units going to Dalby, Bell and Jandowae travel together where we can manage it. That is better for you than a single dedicated truck, and it is the honest reason a date can move in either direction until the run is set. The other variable is where the container has to come from. If the size and grade you want is already standing at Cornubia it goes on the next run west. If it has to be brought in first, that adds a couple of days at this end before anything starts moving.

What we need from you is the date pressure, early. A settlement, a harvest start, a shutdown, a contractor arriving on site with nowhere to put their gear. If there is a hard date we will build the run around it, and if we genuinely cannot make it we will say so at the enquiry rather than at four o'clock the day before. Ring 1300 467 776 with the address, the size you are after and a description of the approach and we can usually give you a delivery window on the same call. If the job is on a property rather than in town, have the approach ready to describe: how far in from the road, what the surface is, and whether anything on the way gets soft. It saves a second phone call and it is the difference between a firm date and a rough one.

Common questions

Buying a container in Dalby

How long does it take to get a container to Dalby?

What is standing at Cornubia, and what the black soil is doing, are what set it. The container comes out of our Cornubia yard south of Brisbane and travels through Toowoomba and down the range, so it is a scheduled run, with the date confirmed at the order. What stretches it is wet weather on black soil, a crane booking, or a unit that needs vents or a lockbox fitted before it goes. If a date is locked in at your end, put it in front of us when you first ring and we will work the schedule back from it.

Can you put a container straight onto black soil?

You can, but it will not stay where you put it. Cracking clay swells and shrinks through the year and it does not do it evenly, so a container sitting directly on soil will settle one corner at a time and end up out of square, which is when the doors stop lining up. Hardwood sleepers or concrete pads under the four corner castings, checked level both ways and across both diagonals, fix it permanently for very little money. Say what the ground is when you order and the timber travels with the container.

Can you deliver into a feedlot or a gas site near Dalby?

Regularly, but those sites run on their own rules and we need to know them before the truck leaves. An induction, a gate register, PPE, a booked time slot, somebody to lead the truck through to where the container is going, and on some places a wash-down or biosecurity step on the way in. None of it is hard. All of it is hopeless to sort out with a driver idling at a boom gate. Pass on the site contact and the requirements when you book and the delivery turns into a non-event.

Can I look at the container before it comes out to Dalby?

Yes. The yard is at 51–55 Bromley Street, Cornubia, roughly half an hour south-east of the Brisbane CBD off the M1. Units sit out on hardstand, so you can walk around one, swing the doors and look down the floor for yourself rather than taking a description on faith. Give us a call before you make the trip, both so somebody can meet you and so the unit you want is not buried behind three others. We are open Monday to Friday 7:30am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to 12pm. If a day of driving is not worth it, photos of the actual container are available on request and we send them before delivery.
