Rockhampton, QLD
Black clay will quietly take a corner with it
Grazing west of the Fitzroy, and the workshops feeding the Bowen Basin, both sit on cracking black clay. In the dry it gaps wide enough to swallow a tape. After rain the same paddock will not hold a wheel that leaves the formed track. The coast at Yeppoon is a different surface again.
Released in town
Rockhampton is a partner depot, so a local order starts here. A look at the unit is a booked time, and photos of the Rockhampton unit go out before loading. Allenstown and Depot Hill are flat enough for a shorter box to come off a tilt-tray. Frenchville and Norman Gardens climb, so those drives usually want the crane. A laydown that wants several in a row can take a side loader.
Coast, coal and clay
Gracemere is 4702, just south. Yeppoon is 4703 and Emu Park is 4710, over on the Capricorn Coast. Mount Morgan is 4714, in the hills. Blackwater is 4717, west on the coal road. Stanwell, Bajool and Duaringa are the grazing names that sit between those codes.
Cracking clay country
A box on bare cracking clay lives or dies by the corners. Fitzroy clays shrink in the dry and swell in the wet, and not evenly. A dry week can feel like a road. Rain strands a rigid that leaves the formed track. Pads under each corner are the ordinary fix.
Depot Hill, Port Curtis and Allenstown are flat ground near the river. The Range, Frenchville and Norman Gardens sit higher, and those drives need a look before a tilt-tray is sent. Gracemere, Stanwell and Bajool are grids, cattle and long earth drives. Summer heat decides what a dark box can hold, and whether it needs vents.
Cattle, mines, the coast
Grazing blocks want feed, fencing and panels where a shed has filled. Mining-service firms keep spares for the basin. Parkhurst takes tools and plant. Yeppoon and Emu Park overflow with boat gear. Builders at Norman Gardens need a site store.
Notes on cracking clay, heat and how a box should sit.
Will black soil move a corner through the year?
Yes, on bare cracking clay. The movement is uneven, and doors show it first. Bearers under the castings are part of the placement.
Is a paddock that was firm in October still right after rain?
No. Wet black soil will not hold a wheel, and a rigid off the formed track stays there. Say when it last rained.
Are drives on the Range different from the river flats?
Allenstown and Depot Hill are level. Frenchville and Norman Gardens climb. A tilt-tray that is fine on the flat can ground on the hill.
Does summer heat change what should go inside?
A closed dark box gets hot enough to rule some stores out, and to make vents worth asking about. Settle that when the unit is chosen.
